Benefits Your Teeth Get When You Consume Tea

Posted on 12/20/2019 by Fern Creek Dentistry
Benefits Your Teeth Get When You Consume TeaWe are constantly bombarded with the benefits of drinking tea. The drinking of tea has been linked to lowering the risks for strokes, liver disease and diabetes. However, we barely discuss how tea can affect our general oral health. Tea is good for your teeth.

Research conducted on green tea has shown its contribution to better oral hygiene. A team of researchers found out that black tea has the ability to kill and suppress the growth of bacteria that cause cavities. Apparently, the polyphenols present in tea that give it most of its health benefits can help keep gum disease, bad breath and cavities at bay.

The Magic behind Tea

Tea and a healthy oral environment go hand in hand. The extracts present in green tea inhibit the growth of gum disease bacteria, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans. The same extracts prevent the buildup of microbes. Moreover, the extract present in green tea reduces production of acid by oral microbes. This is achieved by interfering with the enzymes that are responsible for the breakdown of sugar into acids that erode the enamel.

Studies show that black tea also contributes to the prevention of gum-disease growth. Black tea has a polyphenol called theaflavins, which inhibits the growth of four types of gum disease causing bacteria. The compounds of black tea also boost the production of peptides that are antimicrobial in nature.

The Big Picture
Tea does not only play a good part in your overall health, it also keeps your mouth healthy and happy. Because refined sugar in soda is a huge promoter of tooth erosion, settling for healthier oral options can save you a lot of trouble and expenses. Once tooth enamel is lost, it is gone forever.
