Is Biofilm Necessary?

Posted on 9/7/2020 by Fern Creek Dentistry
Is Biofilm Necessary?Biofilm – a large collection of single-celled bacteria that has grouped together and attached itself to a surface. On green river rocks that barely poke out of the water, the biofilm is comprised of slimy algae. In more still waters, biofilm is known as pond scum. In your mouth, we call it plaque.

It's Not All Black And White

Stop us if you've heard this one before, but not all bacteria are bad bacteria. This principle equally applies to the small city that continues to re-populate in your mouth each night. These tiny, living organisms share in all your snacking pleasures and thrive off each substance put in your mouth. You can always introduce bad bacteria into your oral community, but the ones that just keep coming back aren't bad in small numbers. When there gets to be too many of them though, they start snacking on your teeth. How can this colony of microorganisms with the potential to destroy teeth ever be considered something good? Let's ask your saliva!

Yin And Yang

As you may have noticed in the introduction, biofilms grow where water is present. Your salivation encourages these little guys to snuggle up to your teeth so that calcium can be exchanged to them and the effects of harmful acids can be decreased. This task can't be completed without the biofilm, but you also can't leave them to their own devices. Much like wolves help to control a rabbit population and make the grass grow stronger, daily brushing and flossing keeps the biofilm at a safe level to strengthen your teeth. Even with this daily maintenance, your biofilm has the potential to grow. That's why it's so important to keep your biannual, scheduled cleanings. Let us help you keep your mouth balanced!
