Posted on 4/11/2022 by Fern Creek Dentistry
What Is Dental Milestones For Children? As parents, we all want the best for our children, but this can be hard to achieve when we don't know what the best is or how to recognize it. For example, do you know your child's dental milestones? Understanding these basic elements of your child's oral health will help you make sure that your child grows up with a healthy smile and sets him or her up for a lifetime of good oral hygiene. Below, we will go over some of the most important dental milestones to watch out for in your young child as well as how to identify them. Don't wait!

Early childhood carries.

Some doctors may call it baby bottle mouth—when a baby's first teeth start to come in, he or she is at risk for developing Early Childhood Caries (ECC). What causes ECC? Bacteria from feeding from a bottle can damage tooth enamel and cause cavities. If left untreated, ECC can lead to more serious dental problems later in life.

Are cavities contagious?

Cavities aren't contagious, but some people like to call them cavies because they're so common. As kids, we all get cavities; it's what happens when plaque (what sticks to our teeth) hardens into tartar and bacteria starts to feed on it. Over time, cavities form. We have to avoid sugar and clean our teeth twice a day in order to prevent cavities from forming.

A few ways to prevent cavities in kids.

You can reduce your child's risk of cavities by following these simple steps: Get them to brush their teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily to clear food particles from between teeth and along the gum line. Limit sugary drinks and snacks, especially between meals. Discourage snacking on sweets, eating in front of TVs or computers and prolonged bedtime sipping of milk. Make sure that children get enough fluoride, which is important for healthy teeth.
