Orthodontic TreatmentOrthodontics is the dentistry that treats malocclusions. Malocclusions are a condition of the teeth. It occurs when the teeth are misaligned, leading to bad bites. It has other effects that include headaches due to harder chewing, back pains, or shoulder pains. Orthodontics deals with the diagnosis, rehabilitation, and procedures that include the use of braces.

Malocclusions

Occlusion refers to the arrangement of teeth and if the upper and lower jaw fit together. Malocclusions are primarily hereditary. Other reasons for Malocclusions are thumb sucking as a child, an odd number of teeth, ill-fitted dental procedures, and tumors in the mouth. Malocclusions have three classes. The first class is prevalent. It is when the upper jaw overlaps the lower jaw. In class one, the bit pattern is regular. Class two malocclusions are also called retrognathism. It is where the upper jaw seriously overlaps the lower jaw and the teeth. The final class is class three. It is also called prognathism. It occurs when the lower jaw overlaps the upper jaw by protruding outwards.

Treatment

Orthodontic treatment is done in various ways. It is therefore essential to see a dental professional for guidance. The most popular process involves taking x-rays and taking teeth photographs. Some appliances used in treatment include braces. Braces come in two types. Fixed braces and temporary braces. Fixed braces cannot be removed as they are made of brackets glued to the teeth and connected to each other with a wire. Removable braces have a plate that is plastic. The plate sits in the middle of the jaw and clips some teeth to place. In severe cases, surgery may be the necessary option. At the end of treatment, retainers are used for rehabilitation. They can be fixed or removable. In some cases, teeth may be removed.
