Statesville, NC

Sometimes you don’t realize just how important something is until you have lost it. Your teeth are no different. You might not realize just how much you need them until after you have suffered tooth loss.

Fortunately, those missing teeth can be replaced. At Fern Creek Dentistry we can provide tooth replacement with complete and partial dentures.

Complete Dentures

A complete denture is also called a full denture. It is an entire arch of replacement teeth meant to replace the teeth in either your upper or lower jaw. Some people have a complete denture in both arches. This restoration uses a flesh-colored base that holds the false teeth.

The base is meant to sit on your empty arch and is supported by the tissue and the ridge below. A complete denture for the upper jaw is a little different than one for the lower jaw. Where the denture for your lower jaw looks a little like a horseshoe, the denture for your upper jaw is also made to cover a portion of your palate.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture is made to replace a portion of the teeth in either arch. This type of restoration is meant for people who are missing a section of teeth, but the rest of the surrounding teeth are still healthy.

The design of a partial denture is similar to a complete denture. It uses a flesh-colored base that holds the replacement teeth. It is supported by your gum tissue but also attaches to your healthy teeth using metal clasps.

How Do You Make My Dentures?

Your denture, regardless of whether it is a complete or partial denture, is custom made just for you. This is done using an impression of your mouth, which is taken following any necessary tooth extractions. These extractions are used to make models of your mouth. Your denture is made gradually using these molds.

During this phase, you will have several appointments to try on the denture as it is made. This allows for adjustments as your jaw and gums change. Once the denture is complete, you will have a final appointment to try it on. After making any last final adjustments, you will get your new teeth. The process for creating a complete or partial denture can take up to 3 months.

How Long Will It Take to Get Used to My New Denture?

When you first get your dentures, they may feel strange. After all, you have something brand-new in your mouth. You may find it awkward, or even embarrassing, to eat or speak at first. This will not last forever. Patience is important. Gradually, your denture will become less strange the more you use it.

What Do I Need to Know About Taking Care of My Denture?

Taking care of your denture properly is important for your oral health as well as the functionality of your replacement teeth. However, you cannot clean your dentures like you do your actual teeth. First, they need to be taken out before you clean them.

They should be brushed gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Instead of toothpaste, use a denture paste or soap and water. Clean not just the teeth, but the entire base as well. Finally, your denture should be soaked in water while you sleep.

Complete and partial dentures can help to improve the functions of your mouth and make normal, everyday tasks easy once again. For more information, call Fern Creek Dentistry at (704) 380-9555 today.

"I have never enjoyed going to the dentist and was very neglectful of my teeth. I was not shamed once for this and everyone was very personable, helpful and efficient. I was told by another dentist that to extract my tooth it would be $850 with insurance I got it done here for $110. I would recommend anyone and everyone to go here, clean beautiful environment and the staff makes your day."
